Because of birds eating them, most of the fruit had to be picked before fully ripened; it was not very sweet, but the flavour was still fantastic. The Japanese cherry tree Sakura is widely appreciated as an ornamental, and some cultivated varieties outside Asia do not grow fruit at all.
