Day 1 of 3-Day Lyrical Challenge

I would like to thank Sgeoil for nominating me for this challenge; I always enjoy Seoil’s blog, featuring evoking poetry and prose, and excellent photography.  And also a special thank you for the engaging  Monday Ragtag-Daily-Prompts.

The rules are simple:

1 Thank the person who nominated you.
2 Share one of your favorite song/lyrics one at a time for three days.
3 Nominate three other bloggers each day.

For Day 1, I have chosen If You Could Read My Mind, a tender song composed in 1970 by Canadian songwriter and singer, Gordon Lightfoot. I am including links for performances by Gordon Lightfoot himself, and also by Australian singer Olivia Newton John, because she was very popular in Mexico when I was in high school in the early 1980s, and I have liked her cover of this song since back then.

If You Could Read My Mind

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I’m a ghost that you can’t see

If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
Heroes often fail
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take

I’d walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three-way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let’s be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old-time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
The story always ends
And if you read between the lines
You’ll know that I’m just trying to understand
The feelings that you lack

I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back

I would like to invite the following bloggers to join in the fun, by continuing the challenge, or simply (and hopefully) enjoying the music:

2 Diann @ Goats and Greens

3 Whoever has read this far!
