Children’s Day in Culiacan, Sinaloa

History Tidbit:   The Culiacan Botanical Garden was inaugurated in 1986; its prime location on Avenida de las Américas, just a short drive north of the downtown area, and in the vicinity of the Autonomous University of Culiacan, has become an emblematic spot in the city.  Currently, there are close to thirty hectares comprising gardens that highlight the biodiversity, natural beauty, and cultivation of hundreds of species; I had an opportunity to visit the place in 2015, when I photographed some of the displays, such as their garden pond (pictured above), native palms and trees (photo below, left), and a variety of native and exotic miniaturized trees, in the Bonsai garden (photo below, right):

As I have mentioned before, Children’s Day is celebrated in Mexico on April 30.  Although not a statutory holiday, many schools, parks and museums around the country often have special events for the youngsters to enjoy their day.  This year in Culiacan, capital city of the Mexican state of Sinaloa, the Jardín Botánico Culiacán – Culiacan Botanical Garden, is offering a fun morning full of activities for the whole family, including an outdoor cinema, painting in the gardens, and a family scavenger hunt.

To continue with the celebrations in the afternoon, the Nisei and Sansei community (2nd and 3rd generation Japanese descendants) is celebrating April 30 with an event inspired by Kodomo No Hi (Child’s Day, which is celebrated in Japan on May 5).  The event will take place at the Aquatic Centre; my sister sent me this poster, promising diluvial entertainment for the whole family:

There will be Japanese-themed music, dance, games and workshops for children, and of course, food.  My sister and her family are volunteering at the event, so I hope I will be sharing her review and some pics in another post soon.
