New Year’s Eve and Day celebrations are around the corner; many people host get-togethers, often cocktail-party style, or as a casual night with games, and finger foods are a great option to offer at these gatherings. After sharing a very traditional menu in my last post, I thought of these old-fashioned sandwiches and canapés, maybe not the most sophisticated choices, but which sure will bring tasty memories of past celebrations to many of us who grew up in Mexico City during the 20th Century.

Liver Sausage (Liverwurst) on White Bread –
Sandwichitos de paté
Ingredients
Sliced White Bread
Liver sausage (Liverwurst)

Simply spread the liverwurst on one slice of bread, cover with a second slice, then cut into quarters. When I was a kid, oddly enough, these sandwichitos were omnipresent at birthday parties, always cut into squares, not triangles, and served just before the cake:

Deviled Ham on Soda Crackers –
Galletas saladas con jamón endiablado
Ingredients
¼ lb (125 g) cooked ham
¼ cup mayonnaise
½ tsp cayenne pepper, or to taste
Soda crackers
Stuffed green olives, optional; sliced
Place ham, mayo and cayenne pepper in a blender jar (photo below, left); process until desired consistency is obtained, from smooth paste, which was the classic spread sold in cans, to a more of a minced mix (photo below, right):

Spread on soda crackers:

And for a more festive presentation, top each cracker with a slice of stuffed green olive:

These are great when there is nothing else in the pantry, and are very affordable, I remember one of my friends in High School preparing a batch in the spot just before one of our frequent parties.
Ham and Cheese Crescent Rolls –
Cuernitos con jamón y queso
Ingredients
Crescent rolls
Cooked ham slices
Cheddar cheese slices
Open the rolls in half lengthwise, cut the cheese diagonally to form triangles, and roll ham slices. Fill bread with a cheese triangle and a ham roll:

Offer all three selections for a festive spread (as seen at the top of this post), they will make a pretty and tasty plate for guests of all ages:

An a little teaser of next post – Another classic children’s birthday party treat (photo below, left) and an even older version of ham and cheese sandwich (right), which takes us to the last stop down Mexico City food memory lane: Who remembers these flaky buns, and what are the names of the sandwiches when filled with shredded chicken and mole (left) and ham and cheese (right)?
